Bright Eyes is back! Fans of Conor Oberst have surely followed his recent stint with Phoebe Bridgers as half of the Better Oblivion Community Center project – but the revival of Bright Eyes feels like a homecoming for the low-fi songwriter who remains a cult favorite.
Bright Eyes has a way of tastefully embellishing bedroom ballads into anthems. In Persona Non Grata, it’s a bagpipe solo placed gently after the first chorus. It’s fitting that an instrument used both as a battle cry and to lead the requiem finds its home in this story following Oberst’s indecision regarding a hot and cold relationship.
