Steph’s DJ pick of the week is “Liquorice” by Freak Slug!

Freak Slug, also known as Xenya Genovese, is not afraid to lean into the connotations that pair with such a compelling stage name. Every lyric and line is meticulous and saturated in emotion. Her lyrics are cheeky and playful, but don’t stray from emotional depth that draws you in. Her sound is a mix of alt-pop and indie sleeze that translates to heavy and authentic. The Manchester-based artist is gearing up to release a deluxe version of her 2024 album I Blow Out Big Candles (But With A Cherry On Top) on March 7th. This version will feature new songs and be paired with a new tour set to start this March in both North America and the EU. You can catch her at The Blue Room in Nashville, March 18th.

“Liquorice” is full-bodied, grungy track that describes the conflicting feelings involved in toxic relationships. It has a raw, gritty feel that embodies the emotional chaos of a dysfunctional romance. Freak Slug dives into the issues that she is feeling with the other half, “I spent my money on a post card that you threw away / Make up excuses like you know I had a long day.” After each issue is addressed, however, she explains that she still loves this person, regardless. These changes in emotion are paired with swells within the track itself, helping to further explain the emotional turmoil Freak Slug is feeling. This track addresses the avoidance that we often find ourselves surrounded by in relationships. Often issues are not confronted, leaving that unsatisfied, lingering feeling that Freak Slug is latching onto.
