Local artist of the week India Ramey is taking Nashville by storm. She’ll be playing AMERICANAFEST on Thursday, September 23rd with an official showcase at The Basement. Ramey describes herself as a “singer-songwriter with strong alt, country, & bluegrass influences.” Her song “Debutante Ball” from her 2020 album Shallow Graves is a perfect example of her unique artistry. With a genre-blending sound and a writing style entirely her own, we can’t wait to hear more from India Ramey.
Ramey describes “Debutante Ball” as a song that “skewers the pretension and outdated traditions of Bible Belt privilege.” Ramey’s energetic vocals leap and bend over the song’s steady beat and twangy guitars. Her singing style is reminiscent of some of country’s most iconic female stars. The song’s production also draws inspiration from the best of classic country. The song’s playful, clever lyrics create a narrative of a young woman attending a debutante ball. Despite being less wealthy and privileged than the other attendants, she initially attempts to blend in at the event. As the night unfolds, it’s clear that while the vast majority of the debutant ball’s guests have money, they are certainly lacking in class.
