On “Smile,” Buffalo artist M.A.G.S. (a ONErpm artist) tackles the complicated mix of emotions underpinning an argument. It’s not an easy dynamic to discuss, so it’s remarkable just how well the track nails it. Elliott Douglas, the man behind M.A.G.S., places his vulnerability front and center here, and boy, does it work.
Sonically, “Smile” is, to quote Douglas, “a post-punk dream-pop anthem” — in other words, not what you’d expect from the subject matter. It’s a slightly off-putting marriage, mixing the heart-wrenching mood of the lyrics with driving, anthemic guitars. But it’s a testament to Douglas’ talent that it works as well as it does. The result is one of the most authentic, cathartic tracks you’ll hear this year. Check out the equally emotional video below!
