Rev’s DJ Pick of the Week is “Bonnet Of Pins” by Matt Berninger!
The National’s frontman and lyricist, Matt Berninger, is back with the lead single off of his second solo album. Berninger’s first solo album Serpentine Prison was released in October 2020. Since then, The National has released the albums First Two Pages of Frankenstein and Laugh Track in 2023, as well as the live album Rome in 2024. Berninger’s upcoming album Get Sunk is set to release on May 30. Alongside the release of this album, Berninger will be touring across North America and Europe.
March 11th marked the release of “Bonnet Of Pins” as well as the anticipation for Berninger’s upcoming album. “Bonnet Of Pins” utilizes humor and bittersweet tones to help express how grief can still bring up joyous feelings. Berninger paints a picture of a woman reappearing in his life with visceral imagery in lyrics like “she sidewinders through the room to me” and “she’s still wearing her father’s feather jacket.” There is a woman performing background vocals on the track, helping to create the haunting presence of this woman in Berninger’s memory as she sings “You must’ve thought I didn’t exist, poor you / I do.” The track transports listeners into this memory and forces them to face the reappearance of this mystery woman alongside Berninger.
