Etta Friedman and Allegra Weingarten of Momma

“Speeding 72” by Momma is Stephanie’s DJ Pick of the Week! Momma is an indie rock band based in Brooklyn, New York. Originally from Los Angeles, the band formed through the friendship of Etta Friedman and Allegra Weingarten. The band name Momma was first used by Friedman on Soundcloud, where she uploaded her own music alongside Weingarten. More recently, the band’s lineup has expanded to include Aron Kobayashi Ritch. Momma has released two studio albums since their debut in 2018.

Overall, “Speeding 72” is best described as a grungy, punchy indie rock tune. The instrumental is extremely guitar-heavy, with vibrant harmonies across two or three different guitar parts. Underneath this harsh guitar layer rests a simplistic bass line and crisp drum groove, which drive the song forward. Towards the end of the song, one of the guitars erupts into a wild solo, overshadowing the other instruments. On the other hand, the vocals are calm and collected, with a smooth tone opposite of the harsh instrumental. Depending on the section, the two vocal lines are either uniform or harmonized, with the most harmonies occurring in the chorus.

Momma released “Speeding 72” as a preview of their upcoming album, Household Name. The album drops July 1st, with options to pre-save and pre-order it here. Currently, Momma is on tour abroad, but will tour domestically with fellow rock band Snail Mail later this summer. Further information regarding their touring schedule is available here.
