Mt. Joy

“Lemon Tree” by Mt. Joy is Stephanie’s DJ Pick of the Week! Mt. Joy is an indie rock group based in Los Angeles, California. The band consists of vocalist Matt Quinn, guitarist Sam Cooper, drummer Sotiris Eliopoulos, keyboardist Jackie Miclau, and bassist Michael Byrnes. The group began with members Quinn and Cooper rekindling their high school friendship, but has evolved into something greater. Since forming in 2016, Mt. Joy has released two albums and nine singles. Their music tends to blur the lines between indie and hard rock, with a hint of funk and blues.

The style and pacing of “Lemon Tree” shifts throughout the song. The intro section is upbeat, and features an intricate guitar line and vocals prominently. After the drums and keyboard enter, the song slows its pace into a half-time form. This is accompanied by a harsh electric guitar riff and groovy bass. The song continues to shift between these two themes, using the original pace for the verses and the half-time for choruses. The shift is abrupt and obvious, showcasing the band’s versatility in real time. Meanwhile, Quinn’s vocals remain grounded in an indie rock feel regardless of section, with a sweet and airy tone.

“Lemon Tree” is Mt. Joy’s first musical release in 2022. The song dropped alongside a music video directed by Hannah Edelman. In addition, the band is currently on tour as a supporting act, and has announced a headliner tour later this year. Dates and tickets for both of these tours, including performances right here in Nashville, are available here. Until then, be sure to keep up with Mt. Joy on their social media, as well as through their website. Also, feel free to check out the official music video for “Lemon Tree” below!
