Rev’s DJ Pick of the Week!

Nick Cave has been giving us moody ballads since the early ’70s, but as of late, he is taking on covers. He recently teamed up with many other talented musicians like Father John Misty, Elton John, U2, and Todd Rundgren to bring a T. Rex tribute album to life. This album is the work of producer Hal Willner, who passed away in April from coronavirus. Wilner wanted Marc Bolan (T.Rex) to get the same type of recognition Bowie received – he thought many of Bowie’s most famous mannerisms were taken from T.Rex himself. The album is titled Angel Headed Hipster: The Songs of Marc Bolan and T.Rex, and it will be released in early September 2020. In this week’s DJ pick from Keith, Cave covers one of T. Rex’s most famous hits, “Cosmic Dancer.”

Cave’s unique baritone voice brings a whole different vibe to the original alternative rock hit. He performs the song acoustically, which adds a beautiful element to an already angelic song. As soon as the first notes of the piano play, you feel the same emotions one might attach to Jeff Buckley’s “Hallelujah.” This slowed down cover gives the listener time to reflect on the lyrics and decipher if Bolan is really giving a message to dance from the womb to the tomb. This eerie reimagining highlights Cave’s ability to bring melancholy and longing to any song.
