Steph’s Lightning 100 DJ Pick of The Week this week is “If Our Love Is Dead” by Royel Otis!
There is a known archetype within the world of musical duos; the lyrical, outward, charismatic “personality” of the two, and the introspective, musical genius, moving in the shadows and quietly instrumental. Royel Otis, comprised of guitarist Royel Maddell and vocalist Otis Pavlovic, falls in a long line of songwriting partnerships to strike sonic gold. While a pair of covers brought them widespread mainstream attention, their originals have additionally been quickly catching fire. 2024 has been good to the group, seeing a slew of big steps and accolades. These include, but are not limited to, a pair of gold certified recordings, a signing to a major label, and the release of their second full-length record PRATTS & PAIN. “If Our Love Is Dead” is the latest single from the album’s deluxe edition. With all the recent follow-ups, the duo brings confirmation they’re not yet finished. They’re only just taking off.
It’s not often a deluxe edition track is able to stand with the best of an artist’s primary output. When it happens, it’s a sign of intention, that each song is carefully crafted for release. This is a band with big singles, but they don’t necessarily need them. “If Our Love Is Dead” sounds like the sun breaking through the clouds onto a rain-soaked pavement. A fast-paced slice of indie surf with one of this year’s catchiest hooks, the song is a new autumn anthem as the seasons change. Lyrically, Otis grapples with a fizzled and worn-out love. His voice captures a nostalgic snapshot of a bittersweet feeling, conjuring both understanding and helplessness. However, Royel changes the angle of this lyrical portrait through his bright and driving instrumental. Nevertheless, the mix of moods in “If Our Love Is Dead” creates a melancholic energy that’s as wistful as it is optimistic.
Royel Otis has been quick to capitalize on their momentum with both remixes and live recordings. They performed at the Brooklyn Bowl Nashville on October 1st to a sold out crowd. For the remainder of 2024, the group will continue to tour their record in the US and Europe, seemingly nonstop. In any case, this Australian duo has given the world plenty to enjoy so far this year, and made quite a name for themselves in the process. It seems the sky is only the limit for Royel Otis. PRATTS & PAIN (It Ain’t Over ‘Till It Ends Edition) is out everywhere now. Check out the music video for ” If Our Love Is Dead” below!
