“Porta” by Sharon Van Etten is Stephanie’s DJ Pick of the Week! Sharon Van Etten is a singer-songwriter, film composer, and actress based in Los Angeles, California. She has been active in the music industry since 2007, releasing her early work through self-produced CDs. Her studio work includes five albums and the scoring behind various films. Her musical style is typically related to indie rock and folk, but can vary throughout her work.
The production behind “Porta” shares many aspects with pop music from the 80s and 90s. The song begins with electronic drums, but quickly adds in synthesizers and electric bass. Much of Van Etten’s earlier work prominently features electric guitar, but in “Porta” the instrument acts in a secondary role. The synthesizers are by far the most prominent harmonic presence, carrying the song forward. These instruments are subjected to reverb and delay effects, honing in the tune’s electronic pop vibes. Van Etten’s vocals are powerful, yet fluid, further reflecting the song’s inspiration from 80s and 90s electronic pop.
“Porta” is Van Etten’s first musical release this year. The song was debuted alongside an official video, which features herself and personal trainer Stella Cook. Van Etten is currently on tour abroad, but will be returning to perform domestically this summer. Information and tickets for these tours, including an event in Nashville this summer, are available here.
