Today, we are playing “So Much Wine” by Phoebe Bridgers as Stephanie’s DJ Pick of the Week.
It is Bridger’s take on “So Much Wine”, originally recorded by the Handsome Family. The lyrics follow a fateful encounter with that family on Christmas Day. Bridgers’ sweet voice of concern yearns for peace in their life.
“Listen to me, Butterfly, there’s only so much wine that you can drink in one life,” she sings in the song’s chorus. As the bridge begins to build, the track swells into this earnest cry for wanting to help. This song is full of bittersweet emotion.
This track is Bridgers’ annual holiday cover, a tradition started in 2017. Proceeds from every holiday release help support a different Los Angeles-based charity organization. This year, “So Much Wine” is supporting the Los Angeles LGBTQ Center. Previous organizations Bridgers’ has supported include the International Institute of Los Angeles and Downtown Women’s Center Los Angeles.
