Steve Poltz

“Can O’ Pop” by Steve Poltz is Dan’s DJ Pick of the Week! Steve Poltz is a singer-songwriter and guitarist based right here in Nashville. He first performed music as a member of The Rugburns in 1992, where he collaborated with fellow guitarist Robert Driscoll. Since his 1998 solo debut, Poltz has released over a dozen studio albums and a multitude of singles. His style combines elements of his indie rock roots with folk and country concepts.

The instrumentation behind “Can O’ Pop” is simple yet effective. This is most obvious in the percussion, which exchanges the traditional drum kit for congas and tambourine. Meanwhile, the guitar plays a punchy groove and the bass lays down a moving backbeat. However, the most prominent instrument by far is the slide guitar, which provides various bluesy riffs throughout the song. The intensity of the song changes as instruments add in and drop out, which is most obvious with the slide guitar and percussion. Steve Poltz’s vocals in the song are based on country and folk themes, but his delivery is more percussive and lively than the vocals of either genre.

Poltz originally released “Can O’ Pop” alongside an official animated video to promote his upcoming album Stardust and Satellites. This album released February 18th, and is available to stream or purchase here. In addition, Poltz is currently on tour, including a performance right here in Nashville. Dates and tickets for this tour are available here. Otherwise, be sure to keep up with Steve Poltz through his Facebook, Instagram, and website.
