Dan’s DJ pick of the week is “Black Friday” from the English singer-songwriter Tom Odell. Tom Odell is an alternative indie artists who was inspired by Bob Dylan and Elton John at a young age. By staying true to himself, he created and released his hit single “Another Love,” to great acclaim. This song fast-tracked his career and made him the first male artist to win the BRITs’ Critics Choice Award. After building his strong fan base, he continues to grow as an artist and shares his emotional new single, “Black Friday.”
“Black Friday” is a somber ballad that dives deep into Tom Odell’s insecurities. Throughout the song he often includes the word “black” to symbolize his dark thoughts of how he harshly compares himself to others. Furthermore, he shares how he finds comfort and looks for help from his girlfriend whom he deeply loves. The slow melody and soft vocals help express his sad emotions during these difficult times. Even though this song gives a sorrowful tone, Tom Odell reminds us that it’s okay to ask for help from others. In times of need, asking for help can bring many people hope and help them find happiness again.
