Wet Leg

“Too Late Now” by Wet Leg is Stephanie’s DJ Pick of the Week! Wet Leg are a British indie group formed in 2019 by members Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers. Since then, three other musicians have joined Wet Leg in the release of four singles under Domino Recording Company. Wet Leg’s music contrasts the gritty storytelling of grunge with the lightheartedness of indie rock and pop genres.

“Too Late Now” starts out with just guitar and bass: the bass sets a “drone” pitch while the guitar plays a moving groove. The drums enter with a simple kick pattern, but switch to a more complex beat before the first verse. At the same time, a second guitar lays down a riff heard several times throughout the tune. The tune features effects such as artificial reverb in the chorus and the delay effect applied to the snare drum. At some points, the instruments drop out so the vocals can be in focus. Rhian Teasdale’s voice is soft and soothing, yet the lyrics she sings can be gritty and depressing at times. The backing vocals by Hester Chambers better reflect the mood behind the lyrics, with the occasional scream inserted in to this effect. “Too Late Now” sounds like dream pop or rock externally, but reads more like grunge music.

The release of “Too Late Now” includes an official music video directed by Fred Rowson. The song is the third single released to promote the band’s self-titled debut album. Wet Leg releases on April 8th, and is currently available to both pre-order and pre-save. Wet Leg will also be on tour in the United States this spring, including a sold-out show in Nashville.
