“No Bosses in Heaven” by Will Ellis is Casey’s DJ pick of the week! Will Ellis is a Nashville-based artist and released his EP, Along the L&N, on November 5th. The EP contains six tracks and Ellis describes its overall vibe as “folky.” Along the L&N marks Ellis’ first release in almost a year, having released his last album Canaanland last December.
“No Bosses in Heaven” opens with gentle guitars that are joined by Ellis’ raw, honest vocals. In the chorus, Ellis croons that “there’ll be no bosses in heaven / you’re free to work as you please / you can have any job you’d like / and no paycheck will you need.” Given the current situation with employment in America, Ellis’ lyrics couldn’t be more relevant. Musically, the song has a nostalgic folk feel with additional gospel and bluegrass influences.
