Rev’s DJ Pick of The Week is “Future Enemies” by Yola!

Yola is the rare artistic who has been able to conquer so many different facets of performance and creativity. With her Broadway debut in July, Yola capped off a massive 5-year span of acclaim and success. Said acclaim included Grammy nominations for debut album Walk Through Fire, a role in box office smash film Elvis, and collaborations with Dolly Parton, Ringo Starr, and the Highwomen. In the midst of her historic tear, she released and toured her second album, Stand For Myself. Dabbling in all genres, from country to blues to power pop, Yola is a modern day Renaissance woman.

“Future Enemies” is a new creative direction for Yola, drawing from club music and the sounds of 80s stadium hits. The trancey instrumentation creates a perfect support system for her commanding voice. Her truly makes the impossible sound easy, performing vocal fireworks from start to finish. She delivers the scathing takedown with droves of conviction. “You’re going to have to be both vigilant and choosy in life, in love in work,” is her description of the song. “There is a moment when you realize you’re not going to get on with someone.” The themes of independence and living unbothered are potent within the rawness of the track, and Yola is one of few artists with the talent to deliver that message.

No stranger to Nashville, Yola spent ample time recording her first record here at Easy Eye studio. However, with her tendency to pursue numerous major commitments and artistic endeavors, she is a tough woman to catch. She is well into her tenure a feature performer at Hadestown on Broadway. Not much is currently known about her upcoming project, but if “Future Enemies” is any sign of what’s to come, Yola will surely build monumentally on what is already one of the most intriguing and impressive blossoming careers today.
