Los Saints’ “Hard” is our ONErpm Hitmaker this week. The first generation Mexican-American indie/rock trio are crashing through the ceiling with a grungy rock-rowdy anthem seemingly pulled straight from the 90s.
Hailing from Chula Vista, CA, Los Saints have rocketed out of small town So-Cal and right into sold out shows. They’ve found press acclaim from sources such as the San Diego Union Tribune, Remezcla, Alternative Press, and more. Cousins Angel Mariscal (vocals, guitar) and Emiliano Garcia (drums), and friend Gianluca Exposito (guitar) founded the group. The trio has an indie-rock/alternative sound that feels like prime Smashing Pumpkins if they listened to Fontaines D.C.
“Hard” catches the listener early, with a sampled lecture from English writer Alan Watts. The lecture creates an air of introspection and mystery quickly followed by skuzzed out guitars and chugging bass. These audio clips interject throughout the track, lending further context to the main themes of the song. The song deals with feeling lost since birth, not understanding someone else, and seeking something to hold on to.
Frontman Angel Mariscal had this to say on the track; “Listening back to this one now, I pay attention to the Alan Watts quotes that I sampled. I don’t know, this song reminds me of the feeling of being trapped, failing to let go of the past or failing to move on from the present, how the consequences these failures lead to the failure of being able to grasp what’s what, what you are, who you are, what you are supposed to be, where you’re supposed to be.”
