Dan’s DJ Pick of the Week is “Blurry Lights” by Ax and the Hatchetmen with Albert Hammond Jr.!
Ax and the Hatchetmen are back with their most recent collaboration with Albert Hammond Jr. of the Strokes. Ax and the Hatchetmen are a indie rock band hailing from Chicago. The band is made up of guitarist/singer Axel Ellis, Sal Defilippis on guitar, Hunter Olshefke on bass, Nick Deputy on drums, Phil Pistone on trumpet, and Quinn Dolan on saxophone. The group’s sound is known for taking inspiration from a broad spectrum of influences including the Strokes which is why their feature of Albert Hammond Jr. on “Blurry Lights” is a special moment for the band.
“Blurry Lights” describes the main singer Axel Ellis’ drug fueled haze exploring a museum while on psychedelics. The story is told through lyrics like “I don’t wanna be alone / So show me how to move my feet / I’m freaking out / Struck by these blurry lights / But I must like it cuz I keep on trying you“. The track features powerful instrumentation to accompany the compelling lyrics including gritty guitar riffs, bright brass presence, and carrying drum lines. The music video captures the visual dizziness and spinning energy that is expressed in the lyrics and sound throughout the song.
