“What You Say,” a new single from Cold War Kids, is unapologetically itself and has us all wanting more. The track is off their new record New Age Norms 3, the final piece of their New Age Norms triology. Based out of Long Beach, California, Cold War Kids is known for their upbeat, indie-rock tempo. The band keeps their sound fresh with varying sound arrangements, while implementing mixtures of blues and rock. A hand-clapping beat and rhythmic keyboard sound create an almost concert-like visual for the new single. The instrumentation in “What You Say” perfectly aligns with the lyrics, therefore directly connecting to listeners. With lyrics like “I’m waiting ’til I find the one. Someone who will take me as I am,” Cold War Kids seeks acceptance from others. The line, “I fight for what I love ’cause I’m worthy,” shows they know their own worth, and are now wanting others to see it. A mixture of vulnerability and optimism, “What You Say” puts into words our deepest thoughts and emotions.
