For this episode of Community Corner we’re speaking with Gwen Hamer, the Director of Education and Development within the Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services. The Suicide Prevention In The African American Faith Community Coalition was developed in 2009 due to a need in the African American faith community.
Stemming from a similar program in Memphis, the Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services thought Nashville could use more awareness, therefore founding the coalition. Collaborating with faith leaders and community agencies, the coalition works to destigmatize receiving mental health services. They help others recognize signs and symptoms of suicidal behaviors and identify resources and tools to cope. Whether therapy, self help, or medication, the program assists the African American community to accept there is no shame in receiving help.
