Brother Love got to sit down with Alex Chont, executive director of David’s Den, and Josh Womack local Nashville musician and longtime David’s Den volunteer. David’s Den was created in memoriam of David, Chont’s younger brother who took his life at an early age. Chont witnessed firsthand the devastating effects of a lack of support system and knew he wanted to create a space that provides support and community to people who need it. David’s Den is a “non-profit resource in Nashville for musicians and the creative community that surrounds them. It is a safe space where they can get support, guidance and friendship if and when they are feeling self-destructive, having suicidal thoughts or experiencing internal pressures due to depression or other mental health matters.”
Chont and Womack discussed the hardships that creatives find in their line of work and the need for a space like David’s Den. They both explained the importance of art and music when it comes to identity, purpose, and feeling seen, and the importance of providing support to those who create this art. Chont expressed, “Music has always been there for me, and it ’s kept me from going down that dark path.” The support he has found through music is what has driven him to create this space for musicians and give back the support he has received.
David’s Den offers counseling, insurance help, and a physical space to cultivate community with likeminded individuals for musicians and creatives in the Nashville area. You can find a support tab for donations, and more information on their website. Support David’s Den today!
