This week, the Lightning DJs all caught the twang bug. This fresh bunch of picks are moody, folky tunes sure to get you swaying.
Jay’s Monday Pick- Lukas Nelson “Born Runnin’ Outta Time”
Texas-born Nelson is channeling his inner outlaw with “Born Runnin’ Outta Time”. The track comes off of his brand new album “American Romance” which includes features from Stephen Wilson Jr. and Sierra Ferrell. Jay’s pick is a modern take on a classic country trope, fit for today’s and yesterday’s country lovers alike. Listen to “Born Runnin’ Outta Time” below!
Lt. Dan’s Tuesday Pick- Will Hoge “Sweet Misery”
Songwriting hall-of-famer Will Hoge takes a stab at a brighter Nashville sound on his new single “Sweet Misery”. Harmonica, gritty vocals, and an epic chord progression lay the groundwork for his stellar lyrics to shine through. Hoge will join us in-studio next Wednesday July 9th for a special on-air performance including his incredible band. Take a listen to “Sweet Misery” below!
Steph’s Wednesday Pick- Dean Johnson “Before You Hit The Ground”
Seattle’s best-kept secret Dean Johnson surely set off Steph’s radar for her pick this week. “Before You Hit The Ground” is one of few special releases by Johnson, each more tender than the next. His vocal performance is simply heavenly, set to a warm hug of soft shuffle drums and acoustic guitars. Check out “Before You Hit The Ground” below!
Casey’s Thursday Pick- Emma Swift “Nothing And Forever”
Emma Swift proves her strength as a solo songwriter with this new single “Nothing And Forever”. The track is a deeply emotional country waltz, giving hints of Bonnie Rait with modern roots. Swift’s most recent prior release entitled “Blonde On The Tracks” was a complete Bob Dylan cover album. Clearly, Swift is grounded in pioneers of folk for inspiration, but this entirely self-written single (and upcoming album) takes her stunning vocals to a new level, finished with full string accompaniment and heartbreaking piano hits. Take a listen to “Nothing And Forever” below!
Rev’s Friday Pick- Maia Sharp “Tomboy”
Maia Sharp boldly reflects on female stereotypes in her raw, groovy new single “Tomboy”. Sharp made Nashville her home in 2019 and certainly hasn’t lost her creative energy yet. This song is a largely acoustic, lyric-centric meditation on social pressures Sharp feels as a woman that presents differently than her peers. Her honesty doesn’t burden the song, but gives it the space to be exactly what it’s meant to be, just like what she’s seeking. She even sneaks in a beatboxing breakdown at the end. Check out “Tomboy” below!
