DRKMTTR – Community Corner

For this week of Community Corner, Brother Love is joined by Olive Scibelli as they discuss the happenings at DRKMTTR. Established in 2015, DRKMTTR is a DIY “third-space” situated in the heart of East Nashville, just off Dickerson Pike. This “third-space” holds anything from live shows, workshops, and general networking/collaboration. It can be hard to find a community where you feel both accepted and supported in finding your voice these days. But for DRKMTTR, it’s one of the guiding principles, “to build a community in the underground music and arts scenes to create a safer environment for all ages and backgrounds.”

DRKMTTR is legendary here in Nashville as one of the major launch points for plenty of up-and-coming artists, some of which are seeing incredible success recently. Geese, the NYC guitar band who played a show at DRKMTTR a couple years ago, just opened at Ascend Amphitheater in support for King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. Based on track record, there’s a good chance a number of other artists you’ve seen DRKMTTR will soon be major names.

As of a week ago, DRKMTTR has been officially approved as a non-profit, which gives them the freedom to take chances on smaller artists, host free events, and focus on the community instead of having to constantly worrying about the overhead. This September, we will also witness the inauguration of the “DRKMTTR Social Club”, which include events like a mending story hour, a poetry lab, and a co-working event. Scibelli explains how this isn’t some exclusive club that costs a couple thousand dollars a month to be a member, it’s quite the opposite. All ages, all backgrounds, coming together to help each other grow and connect. On top of this, they really want to create a space for the community that is not alcohol-centric, which can oddly feel so rare these days. DRKMTTR is a beacon of inclusivity and community within Nashville, and we are determined to have it continue.

You can learn more on the DRKMTTR website and support the cause by becoming a paid supporter through their Patreon, with a number of plans and perks to choose from!
