Steph’s DJ pick of the week is “Afterlife” by Sharon Van Etten & The Attachment Theory

An already established solo artist, Sharon Van Etten has chosen innovation over complacency as she collaborates with “The Attachment Threory”, constiting of Jorge Balbi (drums, machines), Devra Hoff (bass, vocals), and Teeny Lieberson (synth, piano, guitar, vocals). This is the first time Van Etten has written an album in complete songwriting collaboration with a band, and the results are prove to be well-worth the artistic risk.

“Afterlife” is the lead single from their upcoming self-titled album set to release on February 7th of this upcoming year. The single is filled with 80s-style drum machines, panning synth arpeggios, and verbed-out background vocals sitting beneath yearning, confessional lyrics. The questions sprinkled throughout the song ask, “Will you feel like coming home?” and “Will I see you in the afterlife?”, which call back to the timeless romantic question beneath every relationship: will we be together forever? Van Etten doesn’t answer the question and perhaps it doesn’t need to be, because the only definitive answer comes when it’s over. Sharon Van Etten & The Attachment Theory make this terrifying idea approachable and undeniably beautiful, and the upcoming album is sure to be more of the same.
