Michael Trent and Cary Ann Hearst are Shovels & Rope, an American folk duo conceived in Charleston, South Carolina. In the midst of two separate solo careers, Trent and Hearst released Shovels & Rope in 2008, a full-length album intended as a one-time collaboration. After committing to the joint project, Trent and Hearst gained attention with their 2012 release O’ Be Joyful, winning Emerging Artist of the Year as well as Song of the Year for “Birmingham” at the 2013 American Music Honors & Awards. Since becoming the act to watch, Shovels & Rope have continued to ingrain themselves into contemporary Americana canon.
