Texas-made band Spoon announce the release of their tenth album, Lucifer on the Sofa, with their latest single, “The Hardest Cut.” The quintet marks this release as their “purest rock ‘n roll record to date.” As a single that proves this to be true, Jayson has chosen “The Hardest Cut” as his DJ Pick of the Week.

For their upcoming album, Spoon did what they know best and created a single that perfectly captures that rock sound. It’s a dark and almost grungy song that garners excitement for their first album in five years. Front-man Britt Daniel found inspiration in the late Sixties and early Seventies music he loved in high school. As a result, fans get songs like “The Hardest Cut” that pay homage to the early days of rock ‘n roll. With it being a favorite off the album, Daniel tells Rolling Stone that it’s “about war games in your mind.”

“Oh, it’s comin’ down, the hardest cut / World wars in my mind / Long day into night, the hardest cut”

The lyrics seem to tell a story of a decision that must be made and racing thoughts. It’s hard, but it must be done. Just like in “The Hardest Cut,” Spoon had a hard decision to make when it came to this record. They were almost done recording the album when the Covid-19 Pandemic hit. Like everyone in the world, the band hoped it would blow over by the summer.

“As May became June and June was becoming July, that’s when the case numbers in Texas just went bananas.”

With a date that kept being pushed back, the band has finally completed Lucifer on the Sofa, releasing February 11, 2022. Until then, you can check out the music video below, which has almost a film-like production. For instance, it’s giving David Lynch vibes as it details what seems to be a hostage situation in a nearby room as the band performs “The Hardest Cut.”
