Last Dinosaurs Afterlife

Jayson’s DJ pick of the week is “Afterlife” by Last Dinosaurs!

“Afterlife” presents an instant rebuttal to the band’s name, and its sound matches its title. The track is electrifying and lively, and proves the four men in Last Dinosaurs are far from extinct. With over a decade and a half of experience under their belts, their talent comes as no surprise. The ferocity of the band can be heard with the first beat, as the song launches into a riff reminiscent of The Killers.

Last Dinosaurs have achieved international success, and have dates booked in America, Australia, and Asia this year. Still, they stay true to their roots. Starting with 2018’s Yumeno Garden, they’ve largely self-produced each release. This allows the band to deliver a good sound without overdressing the song in a grand production. It leaves room for lines like “If you’re out of phase, I hope you find a savior” to offer unadulterated optimism to their audiences. Lead singer Sean Caskey delivers each line with urgency and intent. His vocal elevates the already excitable track to new heights.

The work of Caskey and his brother Lachlan as guitarists should not go unnoticed. Its their arrangement, with the synth-sound lead guitar parts, that give this song its sound. Though it fits perfectly with the rest of the Last Dinosaurs catalogue, it sets itself apart. The band has grown experimental, and with this track, they’ve proven yet again they can take risks and land on their feet.
