Dan’s DJ pick of the week is “Just a Bird” by Blind Pilot!
The Oregon based folk band Blind Pilot returns with “Just a Bird”: the band’s first single in eight years. This song is the first to be released from their upcoming album In the Shadow of the Holy Mountain, out on August 16th from ATO Records.
The band’s signature dulcet folk sound is back and better than ever on this new track. Soulful guitar and bright drums accompany Israel Nebeker’s smooth vocals. As the song builds, backing vocals from Kati Claborn and Luke Ydstie add even more depth to the tune and pull you in further. Full of warmth and sentiment, you will feel this song in your heart. Beautiful and uplifting, “Just a Bird” perfectly marks the return of the beloved quartet.
This album was the product of Nebeker’s years-long struggle to reclaim his songwriting voice. After much traveling and soul-searching, In the Shadow of the Holy Mountain flowed out of him in just one month. The band toured many intimate venues from late 2023 into 2024 to get a feel for their new music. Blind Pilot recorded the album in winter of 2023. Producer Josh Kaufman helped bring this record to life. This project was definitely a long time coming and it is clear how much time and care has been put into it. Blind Pilot’s creative revival and the momentousness of this album are evident in their latest release.
Blind Pilot is taking In the Shadow of the Holy Mountain on the road. Unfortunately there are no Nashville dates at this time, but you can catch them in many other cities from July to November.
