Jay’s DJ Pick of the Week: “Deep Swimming” by Jay Buchanan
Jay’s DJ pick of the week is “Deep Swimming” by Jay Buchanan, the frontman of Grammy-nominated rock band Rival Sons. This is the 6th track on his debut album, Weapons of Beauty.
Buchanan wrote the album while isolated in the Mojave Desert before he brought the songs to Savannah, Georgia. The entire project was recorded in five days, alongside producer Dave Cobb. As well as JD Simo on guitar, Phil Towns on the keys, and the Powell Brothers. The song “Deep Swimming” strips back to a vivid Americana and intimate singer-songwriter experience. Instead of the heavy blues-rock Buchanan has done before, the listener is offered a warm, inviting track reminding us not to take anything for granted and to keep cherishing the moment. Dan’s DJ Pick of the Week: “When You Know” by Bebe Stockwell
Dan’s DJ pick of the week is “When You Know” by Bebe Stockwell. This is her first single off her upcoming album Volume 1. Stockwell is a Boston native singer-songwriter who fuses folk, indie, and pop influences into her music.
Bebe Stockwell is very comfortable exploring themes of love, loss, heartbreak, and self-discovery. Her songs are characterized by dreamy sentimental lyrics. She utilizes energetic hooks, vibrant guitar, and piano for her dynamic sound. In “When You Know,” she continues to flex her ability to make a song full of life. The faint tambourine, conjoined with a continuous bass and piano, makes for an upbeat song. She nails the feeling of driving Tennessee backroads in June, making this a perfect for the nights you want to roll the windows down and go for a drive. Listen to Dan’s DJ pick at the link below!
Stephanie’s DJ Pick: “Rewind” by feeble little horse
Stephanie’s DJ pick of the week is “Rewind” by feeble little horse. This is the third track off their album bitknot. The band, feeble little horse, is an indie rock band originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Their lineup consists of Sebastian Kinsler as the instrumentalist, Jake Kelley as the drummer, and Lydia Slocum as the lead vocalist and bassist. The band is currently signed to Saddle Creek Records and has one other album, Girl with Fish, that was released in 2023. The song “Rewind” is a dreamy track flecked with synth that adds an overall balance to their indie angst. This track adds a brief, dreamlike vibe to the album. It leans into the electronic aesthetic of the band while also having melodic and bouncy elements. Overall, the song delivers an infectious poppy hook alongside a vocal melody of an anxious mantra. You can listen to this track that blends fuzz and electronic experimentation at the link below!
You can catch the feeble little horse this summer, July 18th, at the Basement East.
Casey’s DJ Pick: “Zombie” by Joy Oladukun
Casey’s DJ pick of the week is “Zombie” by Joy Oladukun. This is her newest single, released at the beginning of May. Oladukun’s music is multihyphenated and spans from folk, R&B, rock, and pop. She uses her experiences as a queer person of color to influence her writing.
Originally from Arizona, Oladukun has made herself known in the Nashville music scene over the past 10 years. Her songs are deeply rooted in intimate confessional storytelling, which pairs strongly alongside her rich and vulnerable vocals. She continues this in her song, “Zombie,” through an acoustic, indie-driven track about experiencing fatigue in the digital landscape paired with emotional disconnection. She explores the feeling of being a detached observer in the modern world. Listen to Casey’s DJ Pick at the link below!
