Dan’s DJ pick of the week this week is “Intimate Strangers” by Matthew Perryman Jones!

“Intimate Strangers” is a haunting melody about loving someone you maybe shouldn’t. The song is a waltz, written in 3/4 time. And it paints the picture of two partners dancing “around every answer to the question of what this is called”. The title is a juxtaposition “Intimate Strangers”- two things that sound odd when put next to each other. But in Matthew’s case, it only adds to the eeriness and solemn uncertainty of the song. The instrumentation is quite simple. The guitar melody is slow and plays the waltz for the listener. There’s a gorgeous theremin sounding piano line stalking along the background of the track. The long draw of Jones’ vocals and the strings beautifully complete the song and tell the story of the dance before us.

Matthew Perryman Jones is a songwriter who in his work likes to “demonstrate how less can be so much more”. He finds stories in simplicity and knows just the right way to tell them. He currently resides in Nashville, Tennessee, but spent time in both Pennsylvania and Georgia. He will be taking the stage at Nashville Sunday Night at 3rd & Lindsley on November 24th alongside Jill Andrews. Be sure to catch him there, and also listen to “Intimate Strangers” below!
