Dan’s DJ Pick of the Week this week is “Magnetic” by Tunde Adebimpe!
10 years ago, indie band TV On The Radio released their last album. Like a phoenix from the ashes, front man Tunde Adebimpe is releasing a solo LP in 2025. This announcement comes parallel to TV On The Radio’s exciting return to the road, as they plan to play shows in New York, Los Angels, and London. For his solo work, Tunde recently signed to label group Sub Pop Records. Co-founder Jonathan Poneman considers this relationship to be a great honor and a long time coming for the label. Other names on Sub Pop’s roster include Weyes Blood, Beach House, and Suki Waterhouse.
The song has heavy synth, giving it a seemingly 80s inspired sound. The track is energetic, philosophical, and makes you want to get up and bust a move. However, not the kind of move that’s graceful or choreographed. A move driven by freedom that’s spastic and sharp. Appropriately, to accompany the song is a dance focused music video. The video features lead singer Adebimpe singing along in front of a large amp in black and white. Behind him is is a singular back up dancer who is letting loose and dancing in a way that appears as if the music is taking her over. Her moves are contemporary and interpretive- and nonetheless very fun.
