Stephanie: Ratboys- “Penny in the Lake”

Stephanie’s DJ pick of the week, Penny in the Lake by Ratboys, is filled with joyful twang and hopeful positivity. This song starts out with a bang, or more accurately, a cockadoodledoo! The Ratboys open “Penny in the Lake” blissfully with lyrics like, “Today’s gonna change my life” and “making our own good luck.” They maintain that same energy throughout the track. The song features classic rock guitar and foot-tapping bass. As the Ratboys harmonize on the chorus it becomes impossible not to sing along. What really makes this song so infectious is the undeniable sound of friends who love playing music together. Dan: Fantastic Cat – “Donnie Takes the Bus”

Dan’s DJ pick this week is “Donnie Takes the Bus” from Fantastic Cat. Indie folk band Fantastic Cat does not disappoint with this new single. “Donnie Takes the Bus” kicks off with cheering and applause that gives the listener the sense that “Fantastic Cat” isn’t taking themselves too seriously. Additionally, this feel good track features catchy guitar riffs as well as jaunty piano embellishments. “Donnie Takes the Bus” is made up of old-school songwriting and maximalist instrumentation. So, don’t be afraid to join in during the choruses as “Fantastic Cat” sings “We’re all just dust in the good Lord’s breeze and the wind don’t blow where you wanna be.” Listen to “Donnie Takes the Bus” by Fantastic Cat at the link below!

Jayson: Genesis Owusu- “Stampede”

This week, Jayson’s DJ pick is Stampede by Genesis Owusu. This energetic track blends synth punk, funk, and rap. It is made up of a slew of uniquely futuristic, almost unidentifiable sounds. Genesis Owusu’s performance on this track is lively and exciting. “Stampede” is brimming with frustration and pent up energy. With defiant lyrics like, “Find a oligarch get him taxed” and “Can’t you see we’re the pot of gold” Owusu is using his music to make a statement about the larger world. Also, Owusu is Australian and Ghanaian. In the music video for Stampede he can be seen motorcycling through the streets of Ghana. Give this gem a listen at the link below!

Casey: Jeremy Ivey – “Modern World”

Casey’s DJ pick for this week is the contemplative track, “Modern World” by Jeremy Ivey. Similar to Jayson’s pick, “Modern World” reflects on current events and makes its own statements about our society. Despite its title, “Modern World”  is a vintage-sounding indie track that marries the sonic flavors of the past with lyrics that ponder on modern anxieties. With lyrics like “I feel numb and disconnected” Jeremy Ivey’s songwriting is sure to connect with many people in today’s day and age. Give “Modern World” by Jeremy Ivey a listen at the link below!
