Intern Pick of the Week- False Fall

Here in Nashville the temperature is coming down, kids are starting school, and if you look closely you might notice a few leaves turning brown. We’re calling it a false fall, as the southern heat is sure to get the best of us soon enough. Are you someone who relishes in that cozy autumn feeling? If you’re ready to embrace a change in pace, here’s a few songs from our intern team to kick things off.

Zerita’s Pick-Robert Lester Folsom “My Stove’s on Fire”

When I think of this time of year and the transition into a “false fall”, I think about upbeat but relaxed 70s pop rock. Songs by bands like Fleetwood Mac are an example. On the other hand there’s a classic like King’s Harvest’s “Dancing in The Moonlight.” As the hot summer nights start to cool down, and we step outside for sunset walks with headphones, a song like Robert Lester Folsom’s “My Stove’s on Fire” is first on my playlist. This 1978 regional hit came from Folsom’s only studio album, Music and Dreams. Unfortunately, like many small artists in the 70s, Robert Lester Folsom was not able to continue his independent career. However in 2010 his music was reissued by a small indie label. Years after starting his career, Folsom- now in his 60s- released new music and has gained a cult following.

My Stove’s on fire has a laidback dance-y rhythm and hooky harmonic vocals. It’s perfect for stepping along as we make our way out from summer’s end. There’s a perfect combination of timeless quality and vintage charm. It draws in both fans of the 1970s such as myself, and indie fans of today. Indulge in the nostalgia, and the assurance that you’ll be the first of your friends to listen to this “underground 70s artist.” Check out Robert Lester Folsom’s My Stove’s on Fire below.

Michelle’s Pick – Bon Iver “Roslyn”

Fall is heading our way, which means it’s almost Twilight season. Bon Iver’s “Roslyn” is always a go-to for me during this time of year. The moment I hear the opening verse, “Up with your turret / Aren’t we just terrified? / Shale, screen your worry from what you won’t ever find,” I’m instantly transported to a forest covered in dried, fallen leaves. The song’s haunting atmosphere evokes a sense of longing, yet somehow feels comforting, like a quiet moment of reflection in the crisp autumn air. It’s the kind of track that makes the season feel deeper, more introspective, like fall itself is whispering secrets through the lyrics.

Grace’s Pick- Josh Meloy “Porch Light”

For me, fall music means folky-country tunes with an easygoing tempo and those crunchy, cozy vibes. With nearly 4 million monthly listeners on Spotify, Josh Meloy has quickly become a must-hear country artist out of Oklahoma. He started writing songs at 19 and never imagined a career in music, even though he grew up surrounded by it. Now at 28, several of his tracks have racked up tens of millions of streams. Meloy is currently on tour and even stopped through Nashville this past July.

“Porch Light” is a beautiful song about longing for home while out on tour. Its fresh, raw emotions capture the universal feeling of missing home, making it a touching and relatable story for anyone who’s ever felt that ache. Meloy reflects on the strain that constant travel and the non-stop grind of touring puts on a musician. For me, it’s the organic instruments with a touch of harmonica and a country vibe that makes this track sound like fall. I can picture myself driving down a country backroad, windows down, with red and orange leaves swirling as this song plays.
