This week the interns have written about their favorite summer movie soundtracks in excitement for the soon to come warm weather!

Katelynn: Dirty Dancing (1987)

  • (I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life – Bill Medley, Jennifer Warnes
  • Be My Baby – The Ronettes
  • Hungry Eyes – Eric Carmen
  • Stay – Maurice Williams, The Zodiacs
  • Hey Baby – Bruce Channel
  • Love Is Strange – Mickey & Sylvia
  • Where Are You Tonight – Tom Johnston

I recently watched Dirty Dancing for the first time with my roommates and I felt like I had been missing out! This movie has everything you could wish for on a hot summer evening with 80s synths and impressive choreography. This soundtrack balances songs of the 60’s (when the movie was set) and 80’s (when the movie was released), curating the perfect nostalgic-sounding blend. Immediately after finishing the movie, my roommates and I all took turns dancing around the room, practicing our best moves–because nobody puts us (or Baby) in a corner. The feelings of joy we all experienced upon watching this film are the ones I hope to capture on a hot summer’s day!

Juliette: Dazed and Confused

  • “Sweet Emotion” by Aerosmith
  • “Highway Star” by Deep Purple
  • “School’s Out” by Alice Cooper
  • “Why Can’t We Be Friends”  and “Lowrider” by War
  • “Paranoid” by Black Sabbath
  • “Cherry Bomb” by The Runaways
  • “Rock And Roll All Nite” by KISS
  • “Summer Breeze” by Seals and Crofts
  • “Fox On The Run” by Sweet

Nothing says school’s out for the Summer like Dazed and Confused’s Soundtrack! The movie features nostalgic hits that encapsulate the feelings of freedom that are only found on a hot summer day. The soundtrack features iconic tracks from Aerosmith, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, KISS, and more. The tracks help to capture the true seventies highschool experience with help from lots of bell bottoms, drive through restaurants, and timeless teenage shenanigans. The Dazed and Confused Soundtrack makes me want to take it easy and enjoy summer living and remember that everything is gonna be “alright, alright, alright”!

Casey: Super 8 (2011)

  • Don’t Bring Me Down – Electric Light Orchestra
  • Easy – Commodores
  • Bye Bye Love – The Cars
  • Silly Love Songs – Wings
  • Heart of Glass – Blondie
  • Undercover Angel – Alan O’Day
  • Le Freak – CHIC
  • My Sharona – The Knack

When I think of summer, I am pulled back to late night bike rides with friends from my neighborhood. I can sense it, the smell of fresh cut grass and the sound of cicadas. Summer was long days and late nights, unbothered by schoolwork and other commitments. It was a time of absolute freedom. I feel this same way the minute I watch Super 8.There’s a certain magic to it—the film follows a group of kids who are making their own movie and accidentally witness a catastrophic train crash that proves to be much more complex than a derailment. Its vintage look and feel, combined with the excitement of the kids’ adventure, draws you into their world. You are witnessing their minds try to understand the world around them, and for a second it feels just like those early summers riding your bike around town. The soundtrack of this movie only adds to these feelings. Every song is nostalgic for me and enhances the nostalgic sentiment. With the cold temperatures these past few weeks, I have needed to be transferred to a warm, humid world like the small town in Ohio where the film takes place. If you’re looking for an escape from these frigid nights and a soundtrack that makes you feel young again, Super 8 is the film for you.

Jack: Cheaper By The Dozen 2

  • Express Yourself – Charles Wright & The Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band
  • Why Can’t We Be Friends – War
  • Under Pressure – Queen, David Bowie
  • Holiday – Madonna
  • Sunday Morning – Maroon 5
  • Die Walkure: Ride of the Valkyries – Richard Wagner
  • Main Title and First Victim (from Jaws) – John Williams
  • Will The Circle Be Unbroken – The Broken Circle Breakdown Bluegrass Band
  • Someday – Sugar Ray
  • I Wish – Stevie Wonder

The soundtrack from Cheaper By The Dozen 2 always reminds me of summer road trips as a kid! I would watch this movie all the time as a kid, especially with my older sister in the car on long days of driving. Not only does the movie feel like the peak of summer during childhood but it features an awesome mix of tracks. It has everything from vintage tracks such as “Express Yourself” to a modern feel-good song like “Sunday Morning”. That’s not all though! It also has old bluegrass music in “Will The Circle Be Unbroken” and spotlights the Jaws theme by legendary film score composer John Williams. Finally, the soundtrack boasts a classical piece by Wagner, “Die Walkure” which is recognized by almost every person alive. Cheaper By The Dozen 2 is the epitome of a summer flick and makes me crave the warmth to hit Nashville in the coming weeks!
