Lightning 100 is excited to announce Lilly Winwood as our Frothy Monkey Local Artist of the Week with her song “Had to Cry Today”!

Lilly Winwood is an American-British Singer/Songwriter and guitar player, with a sound that pulls elements from Folk, Americana, and Southern Rock. A Nashville local since eighteen, Winwood chose to take refuge in East Nashville and has since toured the U.S. opening for acts such as Brett Dennen and Todd Snider. She has also graced the stage performing with musical legends such as Michael McDonald and Emmy-Lou Harris. Winwood is preparing to release her next studio LP, Undiscovered Pleasure, in 2026, so be on the lookout!

For this week’s track, Winwood takes a stab at a cover of her dad’s iconic song, “Had to Cry Today” by Blind Faith. Taking a more relaxed approach, the track instantly falls into a laid-back groove. Like her Dad, Winwood provides a more than soulful vocal to accompany this track, but perhaps with a touch more sincerity. With the addition of a horn section and background vocals, Lilly’s version reimagines the song with a whole new character, without detracting from what makes the original so phenomenal. While it may not be the melt-your-face-off version you’re used to, Lilly’s version packs a different kind of punch that may be just as effective in its own right.
