“Possession” is Steph’s DJ Pick of the Week!

The California-based multi-instrumentalist, Ty Segall, has established his solo career on fusing garage and psychedelic rock into experimental musical projects. In late May of this year, he released his sixteenth solo album, “Possession.” The LP is a tender, complex take on Segall’s energetic, lo-fi sound, while leaning into a more progressive style of psychedelic rock.

“Possession,” the title track of Segall’s latest release, explores the themes of mob mentality and how society interprets good vs. evil through allegories recounting the events that mimic the Salem witch trials. Through strong imagery and character development, Segall creates a bold narrative focusing on female experiences in a time of moral panic. The song incorporates a catchy guitar riff that repeats and becomes layered with interpolations as the track progresses. The depth of the track’s instrumentation is executed through harmonies and use of horns which creates a warm ambiance that directly contrasts the lyrics’ subject matter. Despite the eerie and dark story told in “Possession”, the sonic landscape conveyed through Segall’s genre-bending expertise makes it the perfect vibe for a warm summer day
