This week’s local artist spotlight goes to The Weeks. The indie rock band formed in Florence, Mississippi back in 2006. The Weeks got their musical start early with all members being between the ages of 14 and 16. Since then, the band has been hard at work, releasing seven studio albums. Currently, the band is made up of Cain and Cyle Barnes, Damien Bone, and Samuel Williams.

The Weeks consistently showcase their soulful southern musical style with an indie rock flare. Lead singer Cyle has a deep voice that can be both smooth and gritty. His twin, Cain, provides the heartbeat of their songs with powerful drum beats. The band has developed their sound for over a decade, leading to the recent release of their seventh studio album, Twisted River.

This week, we are highlighting “Shame”, a track from their most recent release. The song begins with just an electric guitar and is quickly joined by drums and another guitar before Cyle jumps in with vocals. The song’s lyrics highlight life in a small town and the consequences of the rumor mill. In the chorus, Cyle sings, “It’s a shame every town is the same. Heard him whisper from the windows. Who’s complaining?” The song’s second verse features John McCauley of the band Deer Tick, creating a nice vocal contrast. The song has a bluesy guitar solo and an overall timeless feel.

Undeniably, 2020 has been a whirlwind of a year. In a press release, guitarist Sam Williams shared a bit about how the insanity of this year informed the record. “Throughout 2020 we’ve all come even more face to face with our connection to the rest of the world. More than ever, our neighbors’ troubles and successes are our own. With this album, it’s a theme that permeates even down to the songs themselves.”

Be sure to catch The Weeks’ livestream record release show, live from the historic Exit/In in Nashville! They’ll be playing the whole new album as well as some classics. Grab your tickets below.
