Beach Bunny – Love Sick: DJ Pick of the Week

Lili Trifilio’s power pop four-piece Beach Bunny is back and angrier than ever on their new Blame Game EP. Originally formed for the singular purpose of competing in a Chicago battle of the bands, the group struck gold when “Prom Queen” blew up on TikTok in 2019. Now, following the 2020 release of their first full-length Honeymoon, they turns their focus away from the personal and towards the political. “Love Sick” is one of four tracks off of the brief but impactful project, and it’s Dan’s DJ Pick of the Week.

Those familiar with their music might associate Beach Bunny with heartbreak. Understandable, as Trifilio has made a name for herself in indie rock by crafting the kind of high energy, high emotion pop-punk bangers of a bygone era. Make no mistake, though, there is nothing backwards about this band. Beach Bunny may be emo, but they embody the term with a maturity and modernity beyond their years. Nowhere is this clearer than in Blame Game’s unwavering social critique.

The EP is confident, concise, and audacious. Here there’s no wallowing — only pointed outrage. Trifilio tackles manipulative relationships, sexist double standards, and the dreaded “Nice Guys” convinced that they’re different. “Love Sick” offers a brief moment of lightness amidst this intense lineup, but its inclusion on the record is deliberate. Although it may sound the most resemblant to Honeymoon in name and composition, the track is not a breakup song. Instead, Trifilio defiantly declares that she’s over it all. The girl who might have once resigned herself to the realities of an unsatisfying relationship has grown up. On “Love Sick” it’s clear that she knows her worth.

Sometimes the doubt outweighs the feelings

I’m never sure who I should trust

I’m getting tired of breaking and healing

I’m getting sick of patching myself up
