Childish Gambino is the stage name of Donald Glover, acclaimed actor, singer, comedian, and director, rapper, and producer. A multi-faceted entertainer, Glover began his music career as Childish Gambino in the early 2000s releasing mixtapes. He has gone on to release multiple albums, as well as win a Grammy in 2017 for Best Traditional R&B Performance for “Redbone.” Combining elements of hip-hop and R&B, his unique sound and energy has attracted all kinds of music lovers. Brittany Howard is the latest artist to collab with Gambino. He has worked with the likes of Chance the Rapper, Thundercat, Ariana Grande, and Jhené Aiko.
Brittany Howard has had quite the extensive music career herself. Known for being a part of rock band Alabama Shakes, Howard sings with confidence and resilience. While writing Jamie, Howard stepped away from Alabama Shakes to focus on herself and writing her first solo album. She went on a cross country drive stretching from Nashville, TN to Topanga, CA, where she drew inspiration for Jamie.
Childish Gambino’s version of “Stay High” incorporates synth elements, while still keeping it soulful and silky. Moreover, listeners can hear Brittany Howard’s background vocals throughout the song. All in all, this emotional, yet amplifying track, is the collaboration we didn’t know we needed! Listen below to “Stay High.”
