This week, “Mistakes” by Sharon Van Etten is Stephanie’s DJ Pick! Sharon Van Etten is a alternative singer-songwriter based in Los Angeles, California. As early as 2007, Van Etten was an active player in the music industry, releasing her earliest works on self-produced CDs. She signed to the record label Language of Stone for her 2009 debut album Because I Was in Love. Since then, she has released five additional albums, and is currently signed to Jagjaguwar.
“Mistakes” features various energetic synths and punchy drums, alongside a simplistic groove from the guitar and bass. These instruments work in harmony to create a wall of sound, rather than detracting from one another. Energy output remains consistently high throughout the song, despite not being particularly upbeat. Meanwhile, Van Etten’s vocals are emotionally charged, with urgency and concern on display.
“Mistakes” is one of ten songs on Van Etten’s newest record, We’ve Been Going About This All Wrong. The album is out now on streaming services, digital download, vinyl, cassette, and CD. Van Etten will embark on the Wild Hearts tour this summer alongside Angel Olsen and Julien Baker. Tickets for performances along the Wild Hearts tour, including a stop in Nashville, are available here.
