Keith’s DJ pick this week is “Big Big Love” by Michael Franti & Spearhead!
This song serves as the first release from Franti since putting out his album Follow Your Heart in June 2022. A year later, “Big Big Love” released amid Franti’s 2023 tour of the same name. Franti wrote about what the phrase means to him in his tour announcement: “I believe that we all need ‘big big love’ in our lives, especially today. To me, that’s holding space for those we love closely, those we may have differences with and for the world as a whole!”
“Big Big Love” is a feel-good reggae-pop positivity anthem. The bouncy song promotes a message of optimism and looking ahead to better days. Franti is an activist, who has spoken out against issues ranging from gun violence to climate change. Even for his songs like “Big Big Love” that sound happy and carefree, there is a deeper message underneath. Franti talked more about what the phrase means to him in a video: “It’s not enough just to love the environment…Big big love is when you can do both. You can hold the space for those people that you love the most and for the whole planet, for all of humanity.”
