Steph’s DJ Pick of the Week goes to Momma’s cover of Narrow Head’s “Sunday.”

You may have heard of Indie Rock band Momma from their tours with Weezer, Death Cab for Cutie, and Alex G. Or, maybe you saw them at Kilby Block Party 2023 alongside the Strokes, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Pavement. Momma’s sound can be compared to Soccer Mommy, Slow Pulp, and Bully- they’re grunge with a soft edge. On Halloween, Momma and Dallas-based rock band Narrow Head decided to show off their mutual admiration for each other by covering their favorite songs by the other band and releasing them as a split. Through Polyvinyl & Run For Cover records, Narrow Head covers Momma’s “Medicine,” and Momma performs a version of Narrow Head’s “Sunday.”

The original “Sunday” by Narrow Head begins on the heavier side, but Momma takes a different approach. The guitar intro is light and backed up with some simple drums and shakers. The verse starts off on top of a bass riff, which leads straight into some of the heavier instrumentals that Narrow Head’s version uses. Etta Friedman and Allegra Weingarten’s bright vocal blend gives the song so much dimension, creating a stark difference between their version versus the original. Momma’s “Sunday” sounds like it could’ve been released in the 90’s on one of Hole’s records. We’re glad to have it in 2023.
