Lightning 100 is excited to announce Katie Schecter as the Frothy Monkey Local Artist of The Week with her new single “Hide My Weapons.”
Katie Schecter released “Hide My Weapons” on September 12th in preparation for her third studio album Empress. The record is slated to release at the end of the week. Schecter is celebrating with a headlining show at East Nashville venue Soft Junk on October 17th. As Katie Schecter is no rookie to music, she has recorded background vocals on Grammy-winning Cage The Elephant album Social Cues along with their most recent album Neon Pill. Nick Borath, Cage The Elephant’s guitarist and Schecter’s husband, produced “Hide My Weapons” along with the entire album. With seasoned players Nick Movshon and Homer Steinweiss (credited on Amy Winehouse’s Back to Black album) holding down bass and drums respectively, Katie Schecter’s vision for Empress as what she called “dubbed- out Supremes” is certainly an apt description. With this sort of reverence for the past, Schecter balances these timeless elements with modern relevance beautifully.
The 60’s- esque psychedelic soul sound that is present in “Hide My Weapons” is backed up with clever lyricism and vocals with a mystical quality. There is an evident power in the track that can only be attributed to the fact that Schecter recorded the Empress album while pregnant with her daughter. This feat isn’t unheard of, but nonetheless adds to the meaning of the record. Schecter and Borath recorded “Hide My Weapons” and Empress at The Diamond Mine Studio in New York City, where Schecter was born and raised. However she now calls Nashville home and has made quite the impression on the city- with a photo of her opening for Beck hanging in The First Art Museum for their “Guitar Town” exhibit in 2023.

Be sure to celebrate our Local Artist of The Week as she releases her new album by listening to “Hide Your Weapons” all week on Lightning 100 and catch her release show this Friday at Soft Junk!
