Hello Lightning 100 Family! Even though we’ve been posting for two weeks now, we interns never truly gave an introduction of who we are. Here are some songs that introduce us and embody who we are! We hope you enjoy. Comment below if you can find the pattern in each!
Chloe’s Pick: “Carry the Zero” – Built To Spill
Hello, my name is Chloe! For my introductory song and intern pick, I had to go with “Carry the Zero” by Built To Spill. Known for their introspective lyrics and gnarly guitar tones, Built To Spill, and their album “Keep It Like a Secret”, are a staple in the 90s alternative indie scene. Because it is the perfect crash-out song, it is required that you listen to it at full blast while in the car. This is such a sobering song about self-reflection and comparison. My favorite line comes from the last chorus where lead singer, Doug Martsch, reminds us, “And you’ve become, What you thought was dumb, A fraction of the sum.” The long instrumental outro gives the lyrics time to marinate as fuzzy, layered guitars build the energy. I recommend listening to the whole album. On your next drive, crank the volume for this track!

Sally’s Pick: “Salvador Sanchez” by Sun Kil Moon
Hi, my name is Sally, and my intern pick of the week is “Salvador Sanchez” by Sun Kil Moon. This song was named after legendary featherweight boxing champion Salvador Sanchez, who died in a car accident in 1982 at just 23 years old. Many believe that Sanchez would have become the greatest featherweight boxer of all time had it not been for his tragic death. In this song, writer Mark Kozelek memorializes Sanchez along with other famous boxers like Pancho Villa and Benny “Kid” Paret. Salvador Sanchez and I may not have much in common besides a nickname, but I still feel this song represents me. Its melancholy lyrics and catchy repetitive hooks are right up my alley. Not to mention the guitar tone, which is the perfect combination of gritty and divine. If I were a boxer, like Salvador Sanchez, this would certainly be my walkout song.

Alex’s Pick: “Apocalypse Dreams” by Tame Impala
Hello, my name is Alex, and my pick for this week is “Apocalypse Dreams” by Tame Impala. This is a track off of his second LP, “Lonerism”, and listening to this song my senior year of high school is a core memory of mine. I remember hearing the break into halftime with the lyric “everything is changing, and there’s nothing that I can do” and feeling as if I was breaking the fourth wall in my own life. I discovered Tame Impala after being completely submerged in The Beatles’ catalog for 2 years, and it was the only other artist I could find that I could truly step into. If you haven’t experienced the first 2 Tame Impala records, I can’t recommend them enough.

Abby’s Pick: “American Pie” by Don McLean
An American classic, “American Pie” by Don McLean, is my introductory pick of the week. This song, about “The Day The Music Died,” when musicians Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and “The Big Bopper” J.P. Richardson, were tragically killed in a plane crash, is a staple in my musical taste. After receiving a text from my dad a few days ago, I rediscovered my love for “American Pie”, reigniting memories of playing “Who Sings It?” in my dad’s old 2001 green Ford F150. Artists like Faith Hill, The Eagles, Bruce Springsteen, and Sugarland echoed around the truck, making me into the music consumer I am today. “American Pie” is one of those songs I know all the words to, and it is a great introduction to who I am.
