Dan’s DJ pick of the week is “Are You Looking Up” by Mk.Gee!
This is the third track off of the new album Two Star & The Dream Police from New Jersey artist Mk.Gee (pronounced Mc-gee).
Mk.Gee began his career in 2017 with the release of his debut single “I Know How You Get.” He followed this with the release of 2018’s Pronounced Mcgee, his first full length album. Later that same year he released the 7-track Fool EP. In 2020 he released his second album A Museum Of Contradiction. Mk.Gee’s latest release came on February 9th, 2024 and has elevated him to a new level of popularity.
Mk.Gee self-produces all of his releases in his home studio, and additionally has produced and written for artists such as Dijon, Omar Apollo, and The Kid Laroi. “Mountains” by Charlotte Day Wilson, co-written by Mk.Gee, was sampled by Drake on the track “Fair Trade” featuring Travis Scott.
Mk.Gee’s Third album continues his progression away from his Bedroom Pop roots and toward a more tactile Indie RnB sound. The digitized percussive synths and guitars bring an exciting fresh texture while also sounding warm and well used. “Are You Looking Up” is overflowing with unconventional elements such as the bouncing of ping pong balls and garbage compactors to add texture and rhythm into the arrangement. A solid dead-beat drum holds each slick jaunty guitar riff and vaulting vocal melody in a rocking back and forth groove that’s perfectly low-key while keeping the energy up.
