Jayson’s Pick: “On Fire” – Langhorne Slim

Jayson’s DJ pick of the week is a track called “On Fire” by singer-songwriter Langhorne Slim. We were lucky enough to have Slim in the studio last week to play the track live on air! “On Fire” comes from his newest album The Dreamin’ Kind that came out January 16th of this year! This twangy alternative-indie track starts off with a sweet message from his grandma before Slim lets out an excited holler to kick off the song. Roomy drums and a delayed vocal give this track an energetic live feel. The light-hearted lyrics are filled with fiery emotion and honest devotion as Slim expresses “Feelin’ nervous and my heart is beating, I’ll say it again, Cause I know it’s worth repeating, I’m on fire, I’m on fire.” The track was produced by Sam Kiszka of Greta Van Fleet who created a 60s Motown-like sound that includes fun girlgroup-esque backup vocals and playful organ. Just like the message from his grandma said, this song makes you want to get up and dance!

Dan’s Pick: “Keep Out Of The Storm” – The Sheepdogs

Dan’s pick of the week is very topical! “Keep Out Of The Storm” comes from Canadian rock band The Sheepdogs. This single came out a few weeks ago on January 13th and it’s the band’s newest release! Lead singer, Ewan Currie, expressed that this track was inspired by his time in his developing years listening to grunge legends Soundgarden. The heavily delayed vocals and chugging electric guitars stay true to his vision. The choruses of this song have a strong classic rock sound as the guitars open up and Ewan laments, “I got to keep out of the storm, I got to hide and keep it warm, I got to keep out of the storm, I got to find another home.” I’m sure we can all relate to wanting to escape the literal storm we are experiencing right now, as well as the metaphor it stands for of wanting to escape the turbulence of life!

Stephanie’s Pick: “Easy” – Tōth

Stephanie’s DJ pick of the week is “Easy” by self-produced singer-songwriter Tōth. This Brooklyn-based solo project is the creation of multi-instrumentalist Alex Toth, who’s also known as the second half of the art-pop group Rubblebucket. This track is regarded by Alex as the heaviest of all the songs for this project saying it’s “the simplest and most punk Tōth song I’ve ever released.” This track has an acoustic grunge vibe with dreamy and confessional lyrics. “I’m feeling like myself again, I maybe like myself again, and I’m trying to be easy, don’t you want me to be easy.” This song plays very well with dynamics. Alex has a low and gravely texture to his voice in the verses and then jumps up to a scream while belting “Easy!” in the choruses. In fact, he shared that his singing while recording was so loud his neighbors knocked on the door to make sure he was okay! This song is featured on his upcoming album And The Voice Said that is to be released February 27th!

Casey’s Pick: “Afterthought” – The Band CAMINO

Casey’s DJ pick of this week comes from the local Nashville band, The Band CAMINO. Their song “Afterthought” came out back in December, however, the band has been teasing its release since 2022. They shared that they’ve been tweaking it for the past three years because they wanted to perfect their vision for the track. The Band CAMINO originated in Memphis, where the members met at the University of Memphis, but recently moved to Music City! This track blends the booming drums of a rock anthem and the fuzzy, reverbed guitars of an electro-pop tune to create the perfect break-up song. The song explores the push and pull of a messy break-up with lyrics like, “You, you love all the attention, You just keep me hangin’ on.” The lyrics also make great uses of metaphors and imagery like, “If we were a movie, it would be a thriller, Kaleidoscope of colors, candy-coated killer, Camera, lights and action, the same old story always, The audience is screamin’, ‘Don’t go down that hallway.'” This long-awaited release has some fans hoping for a new album, but only time will tell!

Rev’s Pick: “Funeral” – Dermont Kennedy

Rev’s DJ pick comes from Irish singer-songwriter Dermont Kennedy with his track “Funeral.” This track is the first single released for his upcoming album The Weight of the Woods. The song starts out with Kennedy’s strong and raspy voice, echoey drums, and a dark piano. An organ drones in the back, reminiscent of a funeral service, but nothing else about this song creates the same sense of sadness. The artist shared that it’s about “the past and moving forward into a new light,” and “being tested but never broken.” With lyrics like, “We held a funeral for heartache, We buried trouble in the grass, Wе didn’t bother buying roses, ‘Cause wе ain’t ever going back,” the song explores the hope that a metaphorical funeral provides. This powerful piano-ballad reminds us that tension in relationships can offer opportunites for rebirth and new paths! Look forward to Dermont Kennedy’s album which is set to release on March 27th!
