Jay’s Lightning 100 DJ Pick of The Week this week is “El Camino High” by Moody Joody!
As the film reaches its close and the protagonist breaks into a wistful monologue, it’s clear there’s more story to be told. Threads are unclosed, characters still have tension, and the ending you hoped for isn’t coming. But there’s a glimmer of hope, as maybe it’s the ending you needed all along. The soundtrack to the film is “El Camino High” and the colors swirl on your screen as the track, with its retro twinge and translucent sparkle, conjures a nostalgic frenzy of memories you may have never even had. Nashville’s Moody Joody has a particular talent at using sound to conjure visceral images with an energy that seamlessly crosses mediums.
Dream Girl is the name of the debut EP that houses “El Camino High”, a culmination of years of singles. The self-described “girl group – plus one guy” has been soldiering through the battleground of Nashville’s indie scene since 2020. Their influences are almost impossible to dissect from their music alone, leading to a unique pallet that’s inexplicably Moody Joody. There are tracks that feature both retro synth loops and dramatic strings. Some have both distorted guitars and fingerpicked folk. With endlessly creative studio arrangements, the band has made a case for themselves as a leader for the next gen.
Moody Joody has been on the road with MisterWives, their first major U.S. tour. Additionally, their first show as a headlining act came at Row One this past week. Dream Girl is the first taste of what the group can achieve in a focused, full-length project. They continue to ride high on the success and growing traction of the EP, with more announcements and news to come. While there are no live dates on the horizon, Moody Joody are sure to show face around their hometown Nashville. Meanwhile, check out the music video for “El Camino High” out this morning!
