Rev’s DJ Pick of the Week is “Mustang” by Kings of Leon! This is the first single off the band’s newest album Can We Please Have Fun, set to release May 10.
Kings of Leon is a quintessential Nashville rock band. The band recently celebrated the 20th anniversary of its debut album Youth & Young Manhood.
Can We Please Have Fun will be the band’s newest album since 2021. Kings of Leon made a bold new imprint on the rock scene through their latest single “Mustang.”
The track gives listeners a fresh glimpse into the upcoming album’s direction. The band recorded the album at Dark Horse with acclaimed producer Kid Harpoon, known for his work with Harry Styles and Miley Cyrus.
Kings of Leon will kick off its North American tour on Aug. 14.
“Mustang” pays homage to what Kings of Leon does best. The track features anthemic rock choruses, driving production and soaring rock vocals from Caleb Followill.
The verses, however, are perhaps some of the most loose and conversational that we’ve heard from the band. Followill sings “Love is all around me, everywhere I turn / Is that the smell of fall or the city burned?”
An impeccably groovy bassline complements the unbridled energy of the track’s succinct percussion and jangly electric guitar. Followill’s effective vocal howl boldly transitions into every chorus.
From start to finish, the track is fresh, energetic and electric. While we wait for the rest of Can We Please Have Fun, we’ll have “Mustang” on repeat.
