Birdtalker "Dogs & Rocks"

Lightning 100 announces Birdtalker as this week’s Frothy Monkey Local Artist of the Week! The band’s recent single “Dogs & Rocks” is a unique track full of intriguing and endearing indie themes.

The Nashville-based band feels music in a deep way that translates very transparently in their discography. The married couple, co-writers, and band frontrunners, Dani and Zack Green, write lyrics that daringly explore their own existential thoughts and feelings on life itself. Although these narratives can be overwhelming, the band manages to package their messages in charming and engaging musical explorations. Their new single executes all of these collective strong suits perfectly.

Birdtalker’s “Dogs & Rocks” does indie folk edge in a classic, yet clever way. The lyrics contain that perfect indie whimsy of writing between the lines and prompting listeners to dig deeper while also inviting surface level enjoyment through fun recitation. This is amplified in the flavorful and timeless chorus, featuring easy to sing-a-long-to lines like “Oh Jesus talks to dogs and rocks/That look like dogs/And he teleports back and forth between his odd jobs.” The melody holds the fondness of a communal folk song, evoking the image of friends linked arm to arm with other pals and singing their woes like nothing matters. The song is self-aware and imaginative, observant and expansive. The carefree feeling does not come from the singer having no burdens, but from being aware of what they are and their place in the world they live in. This track serves complexity with ease, making for an amusing yet compelling listen.

Listen to “Dogs & Rocks” below and get tickets to their upcoming Nashville show on April 25 at The Basement East!
