This week’s Local Artist of the Week is Nashville garage rockers Chrome Pony who have just returned from a European tour with Cage The Elephant. We’ll be spinning “Road Dope” off their new EP Past Lives all week. Tyler Davis, guitar and vocals for Chrome Pony, chatted with Lightning 100 about the inspiration for the track.
On tour in Arkansas in 2014 we, blew a spark plug out of my Subaru Forester. It was around 1 a.m., and we were on our way to the next city with a bottle of wine and in good spirits when it happened. We were able to convince the tow truck driver that arrived to tow us three and half hours north to the our next destination. The night started with him offering to buy us drugs on our way out of town, telling us how he could get away with murder as we zipped through ghost towns at ungodly hours of the night, and finally all the different ways he had escaped death himself. He got us safely to the next town by sunrise, within a mile of our friends house we were staying with (by chance only), and I could have sworn we’d entered a black hole and been spit out on the other side. After that we became pen pals, and I wrote “Road Dope.”
Check out the last time Chrome Pony stopped by the Lightning 100 studio, and don’t miss them this Friday at 7 p.m. at Soulshine Pizza Factory.
